Giorgio Maggi set to fight for the EuroNASCAR Esports Series title
The Swiss will drive the #18 Ford Mustang for Hendriks Motorsport – Momo
To bridge the coronavirus crisis and provide drivers and teams with a competition, the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series (NWES) has created a simracing championship: the EuroNASCAR Esports Series. Unlike other championships in the virtual world, the results will have an impact on the real team classification. Therefore Giorgio Maggi will participate in the series together with Hendriks Motorsport – Momo and fight for the title in his #18 Ford Mustang.
The series will kick off on April 21st with a show race on the road course of the virtual Daytona International Speedway. The official start of the season will take place on April 28th on the Indy circuit at Brands Hatch – one of two tracks, besides Zolder, that are also visited in the real NWES. There will be a simracing event every week on Tuesday at 8 pm. All races will be broadcast live on the EuroNASCAR YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Twitch channels. Eight events are planned for the first simracing championship of the NWES.
Maggi is already gathering experience in iRacing, the platform of the EuroNASCAR Esports Series. The Swiss has already competed with his NWES colleagues in the French i-FRN and Italian CIN Cup Series. Further races in local simracing series throughout Europe will follow – including the Virtual Racing e.V. NWES Challenge at the Roval on April 18th with German commentary.
Of course Maggi, who was the runner-up in the 2019 EuroNASCAR 2 championship, has a big goal: “I’m looking forward to the championship and the races. It will certainly be a challenge, although there have already been some simraces. Nevertheless, it is still a bit unusual to sit in a simulator. It’s just a different feeling and actually like driving a new car. I still have to get used to it and learn. We have some very fast simdrivers in the series. It will certainly be a lot of fun and I’m glad that we can at least compete in the virtual world. My goal, of course, is to win as many races as possible and grab the title.”
The first two races of the official NWES championship in Valencia and Brands Hatch have been postponed due to the coronavirus crisis. Before the planned start of the season in Most, Czech Republic, on June 20-21, Maggi will compete in the virtual world with his EuroNASCAR competitors in order to collect important points for the team classification 2020
